Product Description The Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter lets you connect the 30" Apple Cinema Display HD to a MacBook, MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air with a Mini DisplayPort. The new MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air each have a Mini DisplayPort that allows you to connect an external display or projector using an adapter. You can use an external display as your main workspace or to extend your desktop, or you can work in mirrored mode with a projector so you can view what your audience sees. Use the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter to connect your MacBook, MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air to a 30" display that includes a DVI connector, such as the 30" Apple Cinema Display HD, and enjoy the ultimate widescreen canvas with a 2560x1600 resolution.

Worst Apple product I have ever used June 22, 2010 M. Kleman I have been using Macs since the original Macintosh 128k, and this is probably the worst item Apple has ever sold me. Even as I write this review on my MacBook Pro (Yes, seriously! I just now had to unplug/replug the cable.) the graphics on my Dell 30" monitor become garbled and distorted. The monitor has worked perfectly with all other computers, including a MacBook Pro with a DVI port. The computer has worked perfectly when not using the adapter. I also got the adapter exchanged just a few days ago, and the problem persists, despite Apple knowing about this for at least a year. This is an inadequate product, and I am sad to recommend anyone who needs to use a computer with a 30" screen NOT to buy an Apple computer with a Mini DisplayPort.
do not buy for 2560x1600 with mac mini 2009/2010 BAD BAD BAD problem March 8, 2010 S. Schaubach (San Francisco) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I read the reviews here but I thought "this won't happen to me" but, it did. I upgraded to a mac mini server to replace a dual G5 and was happy with the performance but could only get 1280x800 resolution. After reading up, I found that the Apple person didn't tell me I needed a $100+ cable to get the resolution I was used to, 2560x1600. I went all the way back to the store, bought the cable and immediately saw the 'pixel garbage' problem. I even tried using an external USB hub to power it and still saw the problem. What the problem looks like are quick flashes of a dotted line of pixels, looking something like this ..... . . .. .... .. ..... ... and it shows up around several places seemingly around the mouse cursor. It doesn't happen all the time but enough to irritate you and make you want to return the machine. Apple has got to be aware of the issue because after a very brief conversation with the store manager here in San Francisco (Stonestown) they took it back without a restocking fee. BTW, until Apple resolves this issue there isn't a monitor-less machine you can buy which will drive a 30-inch monitor to it's max resolution and, doesn't cost over twice as much as the most expensive mac mini. It's really a shame.
Again, I urge you, don't buy this cable...you *WILL* run into the same problem, take it from all the reviews here and on other sites. I didn't listen and wasted a lot of time and effort.
Use with separate USB power adapter! December 13, 2009 ben_r_ (Sacramento, CA USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Like many of you I saw and read all the poor reviews on this adapter and was worried about spending the money to find out for myself. But when I ran the numbers versus this route and purchasing a separate (smaller, lower res monitor) for my mac mini, I decided this was worth the try. I read in one of the many reviews I went through to use this device with a powered USB hub and not the one of the macs USB ports. Well when I first booted up my brand new mac mini, I had this adapter plugged into a power USB hub and every few seconds or so it would flicker with colors static on a regular interval. Obviously this wasnt gonna fly, so I ran a USB extension cable from the USB cable on the adapter to a Music Power 0900-70 Solo USB AC Adapter/Charger USB AC power adapter (can get them for $9 on amazon) and it began working perfectly! I have had it running a few days now and have spend hours on it with no hiccups. The only issue Ive had happen once was one time after coming out of sleep mode the video was all messed with vertical banding lines of static, but a restart of the mac cleared it up. It sucks that we have to deal with ANY issues at all after paying so much for a silly little adapter from a company that markets so heavily no problems, but giving up the resolution my Samsung 305T 30" lcd yields was not about to happen. Especially since I bought the Mac Mini exclusively for development where large screen real estate is a must.
Works great with my setup. November 22, 2009 E. Weber (NH United States) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I am using the adapter with a Dell 30", a mac book pro 15" and Mac OS X version 10.5.8
I have none of the issues reported and have a perfectly clear picture at 2560x1600.
I would have given it a 5 start if not for the outrageous price.
needs improvement November 18, 2009 Erica Ford (Seattle, WA USA) this adapter also provides a usb port, but beware: the usb port is not powered, so you're effectively provided with just the adapter.
In other words, don't think you are going to get any utility out of the usb port, because you won't.
most usb devices these days require some kind of power to work......
