Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Product Description
The Scosche passPORT USB charging adapter allows accessories that do not support USB charging to work with iPod and iPhone.

Firewire-to-USB Charging Pass-Through
If you have an older iPod interface in your car, battery backup system, or similar product, you might find that charging is not supported with your new iPod. The Scosche passPORT solves that problem with Firewire-to-USB charging capabilities, providing a 12V to 5V solution for iPod nano 4G, iPod touch 2G, and iPhone 3G.

Using passPORT is simple:

  1. Plug the dock connector into the female side of the passPORT.
  2. Plug the passPORT adapter into your iPod or iPhone.
  3. Select a song from your iPod or iPhone and begin enjoying your music while charging

Great for Vehicle iPod Accessories
The passPORT is perfect for older car integration accessories that don't support charging for the iPhone 3G and iPod models released in September 2008 or later. The passPORT is compatible with: several aftermarket head-units as well as Acura, Audi, Aston Martin, Bentley, BMW, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ferrari, Ford, Honda, Hummer, Hyundai, Infiniti, Jaguar, Jeep, Lexus, Lincoln, Mazda, Mercedes Benz, Mercury, Mini Cooper, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Pontiac, Porsche, Rolls Royce, Saab, Saturn, Scion, Suzuki, Toyota, Volvo, and VW. (Not compatible with select Pioneer head-units that use the CD-iB100 or CD-i200 iPod to IP-Bus adapter.)

Note: The passPORT is specifically designed to fix the charging error associated with several iPod and iPhone accessories. If the accessory you are intending to use does not initially support the audio or video functionality of the iPod or iPhone, the passPORT will not enable these features.

When used with the DEH-3000iB Pioneer head unit you can hear music, it says it is charging but you lose all the ability to control the iPod with the head unit. All you get is an Error read-out on the screen (ERROR A0).

4 out of 5 stars Does its job   September 1, 2010

I have a car stereo integration system and when I switched to a 5g ipod nano it no longer was able to charge the ipod as it played, which meant I could not just leave it in there, or the battery would die after a long day. Same goes for my aftermarket speakers, no charging functionality. This adapter simply plugged into the bottom of the ipod and then into the device allowing all of my aftermarket products to charge my ipod without problem. The manufacturing seems solid and there have been no problems with continuous use.

The only problem is the bulk. It is about twice as thick as my nano, and about 1/2 as long, making the combined unit nearly double the original size. Also, since the connection slot is towards the side of the ipod, the adapter sits offset. Also the adapter "slides" into place instead of "clicking" into place. So instead of the sleek compact Nano you wanted you are left with this awkward stack of bulky connections. If you are just going to leave it in your car console then the bulkiness will not matter.

Overall it does what I want it to do and it works as described.

This product works for allowing your newer ipods to charge however when i play music while it's charging i get a squealing noise through my speakers. I would not recommend buying this product.

4 out of 5 stars Works Like a Champ!   August 30, 2010

Our family is an iPod family - we all have one (at least one) and use them constantly. Last Christmas, I was lucky to get an iPod Touch 32 GB and absolutely love it. The problem was that all our iPod accessories offer battery charging the "Old" way, apparently firewire - the new iPods do it the USB way. So while the existing players and chargers would play the tunes - they would not charge the iPod - very frustrating. Especially with the car's Alpine tuner, bought specifically to play the iPod in the car. It would still play just not charge. That's bad on a long car trip.

Enter the Scosche passPORT Charging Adapter. As advertised, it fits between the iPod and your old device and allows the new iPods to charge and be heard on the older accessories. I was so happy to plug it into the car tuner and see the charging icon light-up and still have full control of the iPod from the tuner's head unit. Excellent.

Small things - the unit is kind of pricey for what it does, although it does save you $$ in buying new accessories.

The unit adds about 1.5 inches in height to anything you plug into it - so in our players it sticks up a little higher than before. Presumably, this also adds to torque on the accessory being plugged into - don't wiggle it too much, I guess.

All in all, a great tool that does what it says it will and saves you from re-buying the players and chargers all over again

5 out of 5 stars Good product - works as advertised   August 28, 2010

I use this in my 2007 Mercedes-Benz C230 sport (with Audio 20 system). After installing the factory-type iPod integration kit I was a bit disappointed to see that my 4th-gen iPod nano wasn't being charged. Installation of this unit solved that problem. This unit has a good form factor and very clean styling - the company logo is less prominent than shown in the photos. The connectors are appear quite robust, without being too tight.
